Mastering Orchestral Music at AIR Studios

โ€‹

Hi Reader,

Last year I had the pleasure of recording 3 of my pieces with the Northern Film Orchestra: Snow-Covered Earth, Spring Bloom, and Eskimo Bob Overture.

A lot of pre-production work goes into preparing the scores and sheet music for the conductor and 60 musicians.

The rush of energy and excitement that I feel when the orchestra brings the music to life makes it all worth it!

On the journey of producing a final product, it doesn't end there.

โœ‚๏ธ Following the recording session we have a comp'ing session where we select the best takes and stitch them together to form a composite recording.

๐ŸŽš๏ธ Next, the mixing engineer takes this and works their magic to balance the levels of 30+ microphones to produce a final mix that allows all the right things to stand out at the right time.

๐Ÿ”ˆ Once we have the final mix, we're ready for mastering. For these pieces I had the pleasure of getting them mastered at the iconic AIR Studios in London.

This behind-the-scenes video documents the mastering session where I'm accompanied by the mastering engineer, Cicely Balston, orchestrator, Dominic Sewell, and mixing engineer, Jack Hughes.

I'm really excited to share my latest composition "Take Flight" with you! "Take Flight" on Spotify, Apple, etc I'm grateful to the amazing team of artists I had the pleasure to work with bringing this piece to life. ๐ŸŽผ Dom Sewell did the orchestration/arranging. As a comparison, take a listen to my original synth mockup and you'll hear the energy and excitement that Dom brought to the piece (download the score to follow along). ๐ŸŽบ๐ŸŽป Simon Passmore did the orchestral programming.
